Week 1 - Team Formation and Idea Makin'

Final year projects sure are big, huh? That’s why its so important to find a team that has a good dynamic and equal drive and ambition to produce a good quality piece of work, so that’s what we’ve spent the first week of our time on this project doing. Well, making a team and sorting out ideas, but we’ll get to that later.

The initial idea for this game was started by Ben, who came up with the initial concept for a wrestling game that focuses as much on the drama behind the scenes as well as on stage, during summer break after our third year. The project initially formed from Ben’s passion for all things wrestling, be it on camera or the behind the scenes of it all or even how it became the juggernaut in tv media that it is today. You ask him, he probably knows. This meant that the chance to work on a personal project in an official way was way too good to pass up.

Next Paul joined the team, helping Ben flesh out the idea and evolve the game closer to what it is today. Finally, I (Jamie, hi) was placed on the team as the project was kicked off at the beginning of the academic year. Both Ben and Paul have a strong background in code and art, therefore they both naturally took the lead on those fronts, with all the tasks we anticipate needing to be done separated between them using a Trello Board and a very noise discord server. I took the role of production and organisation in this project, meaning I’ll be the one writing these blog posts and writing up our Game Design Document. So, all in all, with some planning and some luck (as most things seem to require in games) we ended up with. A well-rounded team that all get to work on an area that there are most confident in, while still having the security that we have a competent team that can help cover should it be needed in the future, so, you know, pretty handy.

Idea making is also a major part of making a game from scratch, after all, you can’t have a fun game without an interesting (if not fun) idea. Having a team that works well together and can bounce ideas around and allow them to change as new spins or alterations are put foreword, rather than sticking with something that hasn’t been polished quite as much.
